Data Tracking Purpose

GA4 is primarily a web analytics tool that tracks user interactions, behavior, and traffic sources on your website or app.

Google Ad Manager is focused on ad delivery and tracks the performance of ads, including impressions, clicks, and revenue.

Tracking Methodology

GA4 relies on pageviews and event-based tracking for user activity. It uses session data and tracks user interactions (like button clicks or time on site) to measure engagement.

GAM tracks impressions and clicks for ads served, with data coming directly from ad server logs. This is centered around ad delivery and not the entire user session.

Impressions vs. Sessions

GA4 measures sessions (a period of time a user spends interacting with the website), whereas GAM measures ad impressions (the number of times an ad is displayed).

GA4 SESSIONS vs GAM Clicks

Key Differences:

  • Sessions measure overall user interaction with your website or app, covering various actions (pageviews, events, transactions), while clicks measure a specific action of engaging with an ad.
  • Sessions can contain multiple clicks if a user interacts with several ads during their visit, but it can also have none.

  • Clicks are tied to ad campaigns and performance in GAM, while sessions provide insight into broader user activity and behavior in GA4.
